Life In A Startup!

I’m not sure if you’ve noticed but we’ve been on a recruiting spree for close to a month now. One of the things that we made clear during our interview process was to make it extremely clear to our applicants on what they can REALLY expect. While everyone knows what happens in Fortune 500 companies, life at a startup is certainly a world apart and unless there is a buy-in from each and every employee, it is quite difficult for a startup to succeed!

While my search for resources continue, I’d like to point you to a certain FB thread in the Chennai OCC FB group where there’s a wonderful discussion on life in a startup. I’m quoting from a fellow Chennai OCC member P V Sundar who’s nailed it right in the head!

Things to expect when working at a startup:

1. You will have a lot of independence
2. Everybody will encourage your ideas & allow you to try new stuff
3. You will have more work & responsibility than you can manage
4. You will develop great relationships with your peers
5. Loads of fun(pressure) when shit hits the fan
6. Nobody will be there to spoon feed you, but people will certainly be very helpful
7. Complete chaos at times
8. The organization will be a lot flatter rather than hierarchal
9. Emphasis on getting things done rather than process
10. You will own your projects / modules (no nosing around by bosses, after all there are none!)
11. Zero politics (well, where’s the time for it?)
12. Highly risky
13. Pays well in the long run
14. Many sleepless nights
15. Zero support from relatives
16. At times there wont be any precedence and you will be the first guy to do it.

Now all I have to do is point prospective applicants to this post and ask them if they are ready to work in a startup! Thank you P V Sundar!
